Understanding Your Key Number
Your Key Number is a special number derived from your birthday and today's date. Based on numerological tradition, it creates a unique daily connection between you and the tarot — a number that changes every day and is different for every person.
What Is the Key Number?
When you set your birthday in arcanamaze, a Key Number appears alongside your daily card. This is based on the numerological concept of a Personal Day Number, mapped to the Major Arcana.
The standard "day numerology" number is calculated from today's date alone — everyone gets the same number. Your Key Number, however, factors in your birthday, so the same day produces a different number for each person.
In other words, the Key Number represents what today means specifically for you.
How It's Calculated
The Key Number follows the standard numerological "reduction" method.
Step 1: Find Your Personal Year Number
Add your birth month and day to the current year, then reduce to a single digit by summing the digits repeatedly.
Example: Birthday is June 15, current year is 2026
6 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 22
2 + 2 = 4
→ Personal Year Number = 4
Step 2: Find Your Personal Day Number
Add your Personal Year Number to today's month and day, then reduce again.
Example: Personal Year Number is 4, today is March 21
4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10
1 + 0 = 1
→ Key Number = I (The Magician)
Note: Some numerological traditions preserve 11 and 22 as master numbers, but arcanamaze reduces all values to correspond with the Major Arcana (0–21).
Key Number and Tarot Card Correspondences
Your Key Number ranges from 1 to 9, each corresponding to a Major Arcana card:
| Key Number | Card | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| I | The Magician | Will and creation. A day to take initiative. |
| II | The High Priestess | Intuition and receptivity. Listen to your inner voice. |
| III | The Empress | Abundance and nurturing. Creative energy flows. |
| IV | The Emperor | Structure and stability. Plan and execute. |
| V | The Hierophant | Learning and teaching. Share your wisdom. |
| VI | The Lovers | Choice and harmony. Engage with important relationships. |
| VII | The Chariot | Forward motion and overcoming. Break through obstacles. |
| VIII | Strength | Inner power. Patience and compassion are tested. |
| IX | The Hermit | Introspection and seeking. Solitude holds value today. |
Using Your Key Number
Combining with Your Daily Oracle
In arcanamaze, your randomly drawn card and Key Number appear together. Reading the relationship between them unlocks deeper messages.
Example: Key Number is VII (The Chariot) and you drew The Hermit
- The Chariot says "move forward," The Hermit says "pause and reflect"
- Rather than contradicting each other, they combine into: "Move forward with inner conviction"
Observing Patterns
In Journey (timeline), you can review past Key Number and card combinations:
- Do similar cards appear on days with the same Key Number? → Your personal themes are emerging
- Did your Key Number and drawn card share the same number? → A day of special resonance
Key Number vs. Day Numerology
| Day Numerology | Key Number | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Today's date only | Birthday + today's date |
| Result | Same for everyone | Unique to you |
| Meaning | Universal energy of the day | What today means for you personally |
| Display | Always shown | Shown after setting birthday |
If you haven't set your birthday, day numerology is displayed. Once set, it switches to your Key Number. Both are valid numerological indicators.
Relationship to Life Path Number
The Life Path Number shown on your Insight page is calculated from your full birthday alone — it represents the overarching theme of your life. Your Key Number, which changes daily, represents today's theme.
If your Life Path Number is the whole mountain, your Key Number is the step you're taking today. Awareness of both helps you see where "now" fits within the bigger picture.
